Greg Schmitt ’22 chose Colorado College because of its academics and its proximity to the Rocky Mountains.
While at CC, he embraced every opportunity to be in the mountains: big mountain skiing, mountaineering, and rock climbing. He used Block Breaks and free time to explore the surrounding wilderness. He trained in backcountry and avalanche safety. He climbed 14ers. He slept out under the stars.
Greg's greatest joy was sharing mountain activities with others. His closest friends shared the outdoors with him, drawn by his outgoing nature and infectious smile. He approached every adventure with passion, excitement, and determination.
The mountains were a magnet for Greg. They physically challenged him. They brought him mental peace. And in seeking to protect them, he found purpose. Deeply concerned about the impact of climate change on Rocky Mountain snowpack, Greg dedicated himself to environmental work as a chemical engineer developing carbon capture technology. His studies at CC prepared him to join a carbon capture startup in New York City, where he excelled at his work.
The Greg Schmitt ’22 Memorial Endowment honors Greg by supporting current CC students in the same kind of adventure that shaped him.
Once the fund reaches $100,000, it becomes a permanent endowment, supporting CC Outdoor Education in perpetuity by reducing financial barriers for students who want to ski, climb, take wilderness first aid and avalanche courses, rent equipment, or earn outdoor certifications.
The mountains gave Greg joy, peace, and purpose. Your gift helps future generations of CC students find the same.
